Community Safety &

Security Assessments


The Community Safety & Security Assessment is the next step for a community after developing a domestic task force or coordinating council.  The assessment is an intricate process of evaluating:

q       How a community responds to domestic violence and how it impacts victim safety.

q       The inter and intra working relationships of the community organizations working with domestic violence.

q       How well the community holds abusers accountable for their violence.

q       How accountable community organizations are to victims of domestic violence.

The Community Safety & Security Assessment described in detail below can be conducted by:

q       Assessing all community organizations

q       Assessing select community organizations

q       Assessing individual community organizations

Example of organizations typically involved in the assessment:

q       Law enforcement agencies

q       911 communications

q       Probation

q       Courts

q       Women’s shelters

q       Prosecutor’s office

P.T.I. uses an experienced team of consultants to conduct the Community Safety & Security Assessment.

 The assessment is divided into four phases:

 Phase I (Off Site)

q       Consultant Team reviews written materials (policies, procedures, sample reports, etc.) that community organizations supply.

q       Consultant Team works with community to select a team of employees from different organizations to participate in the assessment.  

Phase II (On Site)

q       Training of organization’s team on dynamics of domestic violence, myths and realities, and the assessment process.  

q       Training on Interviewing Techniques  

q       Mapping of the organization’s response to domestic violence  

q       Mapping each individual department/ agency within an organization.  

Phase III (On Site)

q       Consultant team pairs up with employee team for interview and observations phase of the assessment  

q       Interview employees about policies and procedures  

q       Interview employees about training and development  

q       Debrief team members on interview/observation phase  

q       Identify ways to increase organizational safety/security with no budget or limited resources

Phase IV (Off Site)

q       Consultant Team reviews data and prepares final report including any recommendations

q       Delivers to employee team

Phase V  (Can be Consultant Team or Employee Team)

q       Deliver copies of final report to managers  

q       Meet with each department head and discuss final report and recommendations.
